Creativity is not the sole domain of artist and designer everyone is creative in his own respective sphere.In this article I have tried to ink down few essentials which if integrated properly within the work culture could produce exemplary results both for the organisation and the individual. In order to be effectively creative organisation can cover Ten C’s .
Creativity
The hall mark of creativity is curiosity & exploring it. Creative people ask question as if they were children, never stop asking question, being open and flexible. Ask people why they are doing what they are doing. Look for better ways to do things, have one new idea for everything you do.
During Internal meetings & workshop, brainstorming or mind storming session could be held, for e.g. At first clearly define the question or problem, secondly Involve the junior management team in a group of 4 to 7 and ask them to brainstorm and each individual can come up with as many ideas as possible and set the rule of avoiding the evaluation of idea during the process. The focus should be on quantity not quality and it should be made sure that no one says anything that throws water on the ideas of others and discourage them to think out of the box.
Evaluation and discussion on the ideas could take place at different session; it can be helpful to bring all together a different group of people from senior management this time. This group can consider the ideas without ego involvement and emotional attachment to the ideas and hence they will be able to assess the ideas more objectively.
By using this creativity tool the organisation can have torrent of ideas for the question or problems at hand. The more ideas that are implemented the more people would be encouraged to come up with. In 1975 the profit of Mazda group fell down to meagre 5 million $ and the company was running on all time low monetarily and motivationally, it was then Mazda asked the employees to come up with new ideas for the organisation and the ideas that would be picked and implemented would be rewarded and Mazda got around 20k recommendation and it implemented 60% of the ideas from its employees and within 5 year Mazda rose from 5 million to 95 million and the flow of ideas went from 20k to 200k but Mazda still maintained 60 % implementation rate for the ideas. The motivation behind the ideas was not the reward but the fact that it is being implemented gave enormous moment of pride to its employees.
Whereas the other companies had 10 % of implementation rate of the ideas and feedback which means only one out of 10 ideas would be considered, the remaining nine ideas which are rejected would disappointment the employees to generate more ideas in the future.
Creativity is simply improvement, the more you look to improve on daily basis the more creative you become, Success in Business is directly proportional to the quantity of new ideas that company comes up on day to day or week to week basis. In order to be sustainable in the competitive ambiance the company needs to have stream of new ideas, the more the ideas the more chances are that company would be successful.
Another creativity tool which could be used is Reverse brainstorming in which you ask different teams to come up with problems rather than solution, What would you do as a Company to lose your customer .
Competence
Do what are you are doing with excellence and competence and keep it in the corner of your mind that Excellence is journey not destination, so you have to perform your task in best way possible every time out and strive for doing it better.
Clarity
Everyone has Line of sight through which one sees or perceives the world, the key to clarity is to know where you are going & what is it you want to be & what is it you want to have & what is it you want to do because in today’s world you can have anything you want but you have to decide what is it you want.
The second key to clarity is decisiveness, be decisive with your decision as manager, as an employee. The reason we are Indecisive is we afraid of making mistakes, the problem with this is the way we think becomes habit and the habit of Indecisiveness won’t do any good to anyone. Be ready to take hard decisions readily.
We quote” The thing about decision is to make a decision and if that doesn’t work make another decision & if that doesn’t work make another decision and if it still doesn’t work probably you are in the wrong field. The successful companies doesn’t take right decision, they take decision and make it right. Once you take a decision commit yourself to it with confidence and courage and the make sure it comes out right.
Have a vision for yourself and your organization and work on it. Most often people tone down their vision and it becomes so small and insignificant that it no longer excites them. Dream big and focus on results not activity. Ask self question” What results are expected of me? And second question you can ask is why I am on the payroll.
Confidence
Confidence comes as a result, once you start doing things which stimulates your mind and it yields results you will be confident about your work, about yourself. Confidence cannot be learnt you only get confidence by doing things and producing results.
Consistency
Create a consistency environment and find people who have been consistent in their endeavour and keep them as benchmark for others to follow. It would bring in an extra value as it means when you say something you will do it .If the consistency in delivering results becomes the norm the organisation as whole becomes more dependant and reliable. Don’t do things which disrupts the peace of mind, do what you love.
Consideration
The platform should be provided to everyone in the company to interact with each and develop more of people skills and be more considerate. Informal interaction in the office within the hierarchy helps in boosting up self esteem and as result bringing in self confidence to do the task. It also helps people to learn to listen to others.
Courage
You should have the ability to confront your fears and rectify the cause of it. In this context Mar Twain said “Do the Thing you fear and the death of fear is certain. As an employee one can have apprehension about one’s own ability to perform the task to the optimal level, Confront the fear and dissolve it with solution and hard work… Helen Keller said Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.
The fear of failure or mistake is a habit which can be counteracted by the habit of courage.
Finally with regards to courage one must be persistent at the face of adversity, you might be scared whether you would be able to deliver the project on time, it just takes courage to realize your own self potential to do the task in the best way possible.
Common Sense
As per the book who is who ‘average man has enormous amount of common sense as they haven’t used any of it yet. Action without thinking is the most common cause of failure and common sense comes from taking the time to think things through before you act. Common sense also implies that one should learn from the setbacks.

Commitment
Inspiring people in progress not perfection commit yourself wholeheartedly to the task and you will achieve what is there to be achieved. Pick work that you love, specialize and learn more about it and by default you would be committed to it and if you’re committed to something results and the outcome is bound to be fruitful. Find a work that you can commit yourself to. Commit yourself to your company.
